In a powerful move toward shaping a digitally resilient Southeast Asia, the ASEAN Foundation recently hosted the AI Ready ASEAN workshop in Bandung, engaging more than 500 students in an immersive learning experience. Held at SMP Plus Muthahhari in Kabupaten Bandung, the event also welcomed prominent leaders, including Gibran Rakabuming Raka and West Java Deputy Governor Erwan Setiawan.

This workshop is part of the broader AI Ready ASEAN initiative, a USD 5 million program supported by Google.org. The initiative aims to equip over 5.5 million people across ASEAN with essential AI knowledge and responsible digital skills. For Indonesia’s youth, it delivers a clear message: the future belongs to those who can harness AI ethically and creatively.

Building AI Literacy for a Digital Future

Launched in early 2025, AI Ready ASEAN is a comprehensive regional program designed to accelerate AI literacy through three key pillars: awareness, training of trainers, and in-depth learning via the AI Class ASEAN platform.

The Bandung workshop represents the program’s community-level impact in action—bringing hands-on AI education directly to students outside major tech hubs. Participants explored fundamental AI concepts, real-world applications, and ethical considerations, ensuring they understand not just how to use AI, but how to use it responsibly.

This inclusive approach is crucial for Indonesia, where digital transformation is rapidly reshaping industries from creative economy sectors to sustainable business innovation.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Digital Talent

During the event, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka emphasized the importance of early AI education in strengthening Indonesia’s digital economy. Students were encouraged to combine technical skills with ethical awareness—an increasingly critical combination in today’s AI-driven landscape.

The workshop featured interactive sessions, allowing students to experiment with AI tools and understand their real-life applications. From content creation to problem-solving, participants gained practical exposure that can directly support future careers in technology, entrepreneurship, and digital marketing.

More importantly, the session helped build confidence—showing students that AI is not just for experts, but accessible to anyone willing to learn.

Why AI Skills Matter for Indonesia’s Gen Z

With over 70 million young people, Indonesia holds a powerful demographic advantage. However, to fully unlock this potential, digital skills—especially AI literacy—are essential.

AI knowledge provides a competitive edge in today’s job market, where roles increasingly demand familiarity with automation, data, and digital tools. Beyond careers, it also empowers young people to innovate, build startups, and create solutions for local challenges in sectors like agriculture, education, and sustainability.

Equally important is ethical awareness. Understanding issues such as bias, data privacy, and responsible AI use ensures that future innovators build technology that benefits society as a whole.

Strengthening ASEAN’s Digital Ecosystem

The impact of AI Ready ASEAN goes beyond Indonesia. It contributes to a region-wide effort to strengthen Southeast Asia’s digital economy and global competitiveness. Through collaborations with governments, organizations, and platforms like AI Class ASEAN, the initiative is building a strong foundation for cross-border innovation.

Indonesia, with key tech hubs in Bandung, Jakarta, and Yogyakarta, plays a vital role in this transformation. Programs like this workshop ensure that growth is inclusive—reaching students at all levels and regions.

Taking the First Step into AI

For young professionals and students inspired by this initiative, building AI skills doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with free learning platforms, explore tools like ChatGPT or generative AI applications, and actively participate in digital communities.

Consistency is key. Small steps—learning one tool, joining one workshop, or building one project—can lead to significant opportunities over time.

The Road Ahead

The success of the Bandung workshop highlights a promising future: one where Indonesian youth are not just digital consumers, but creators and innovators. With continued collaboration between organizations like the ASEAN Foundation and Google.org, Indonesia is steadily moving toward becoming a leading digital powerhouse in Southeast Asia.

For Gen Z, the message is clear—embrace AI, lead with ethics, and shape the future.
